Why reviving democracy will fail... in the little known place of Potong Pasir

I read daily with much discouragement about the developments
at Potong pasir .with so much online support for the revival
and return of the estate to the Chiams.

Nevertheless only 2000 over signatures are collected after
the last 2 days when in fact 8000 is needed. With the estate total
voters for Lina Chiam at 7,859. Could it be seem that the online
support and love for Mr Chiam See Tong is stronger
 than on the ground.

After devoting 27 years of his life to Opposition Politics
and a strong hold of the estate , could the clock have finally
tick to its end. have the people of the Estate finally got divided
after promises of a better future , an incoming Upgrading ,
a newer rejuvenation of the Town.

The fact that Mr Chiam has suffered and survive
a medical situation is a double edged sword. On
one hand he is reverred for his Political strength
and determination but on the contrary
he is also likened as someone who should let
go of his domain and retire.Could this be the
reason for the division at the estate
at the moment.

another thought

that if NSP fielding someone as capable
and politically media Savy as Nicole Seah does not warran
t her an opportunity into Parliament , what is the general
perception of Ms Lina Chiam...with no political connections
in the past except thru her husband...Singaporeans are generally
a realistic bunch of people and they may have
questioned her abilities to manage their estate. So a
candidate from another affiliation seems
a more practical answer.

I am keeping my finger crossed that the outcome
will be peaceful and amicable , watever the result
 and consequence.

I respect Mr Chiam , and I respect Potong pasir
resident for their past years of support and dedication
and loyalty. But it seems that the situation in
potong Pasir has reached a turning point.

It may just be a new beginning
...but at the same time i sense a
worrying feel that 5 years later
Little Potong Pasir may not be
here anymore.

this is just my personal opinion and
everyone is entitled to
their own story.

Singa Of Singapura -LION in the City (Remembering JB Jeyaretnam)

Its been a while since my last posting and
this time around I really wanted to write
about something more interesting
and closer my the heart and ideals.

Joshua Benjam Jeyaretnam

(5 January 1926 – 30 September 2008
more commonly known as
"J.B. Jeyaretnam"

"J.B.J

became the first opposition
politician since
Singapore's independence in
1965 to win in Parliament, when he
defeated the candidate
of the governing People's Action Party
(PAP) by-election in the constituency of
Anson. He was re-elected at the 1984
general election, but lost his seat in
Parliament in 1986 following a conviction
for falsely accounting the party's
funds ( he always maintained was
politically motivated).

He returned to Parliament after the
1997 general election as a

Non-Member Member of Parliament
(NCMP) . he was stripped of his NCMP
seat in 2001 when he was declared
bankrupt after failing to keep u
with payment for damages to
PAP leaders as a result of a libel
suit. He left the Worker that later
that year.

He was discharged from bankruptcy
in 2007,and founded the Reform
Party in June 2008.

He died of heart failure September 2008,
three months after founding the Reform
Party which is now led by his son,
Kenneth Jeyaretnam.

Excerpt taken - At the funeral parlour this afternoon,

Kenneth Jeyaretnam related
to us how despite warnings from doctors about
his father's heart condition, JBJ kept putting
off medical treatment until such a time
when he could finish his immediate task.

And what was this task that was so urgent?

He had been toiling in court to bring the
Singapore Government to bear for not
holding a by-election after a PAP MP
had passed away recent
He didn't have to do this, nor did he have

to form a new political party, or to revive his
law practice. At the age of 82, he should
have long retired, as both of his sons are
successful professionals.

Even to his last day, he battled for justice
for accountability for a free Singapore.
He gave away his life, literally, to the pursuit
of genuine Democracy in Singapore.

An enduring STAR Fizzles onto the night -LIZ taylor

I first notice her when i was a kid watching "Cleopatra"

The violet eyes framed (because of a miraculous mutation) with double lashes;
the bone-china skin and purplish-black hair; the dangerous curves,
the “dark, unyielding largesse.....

She had the sublime arrogance of a queen, and the hard pragmatism of
someone who knew that power is infinitely more desirable than beauty.

Remember, this is the self-titled “Mother Courage” who bore five
children, who married eight times, burying one husband (producer Mike Todd),
and who befriended a series of beautiful, deeply damaged men – friendships
that would lead, on one level, to her seminal and utterly critical work with
 AIDS charities and education.

In 1956, she became a confidante to James Dean (her co-star in Giant):

Also in 1956, she would run to the side of her closeted gay, drug-addicted and
tragic friend Montgomery Clift when he smashed his car into a telephone pole
 after leaving a party at her house. She held his broken head in her hands;
she gathered his bloody teeth until help arrived. And she remained his friend
 throughout his turbulent life.

As she did with Rock Hudson, when rumours of his being gay
and HIV-positive roared through the industry and press. Since he had
just kissed Linda Evans on Dynasty, the tabloids were filled with repugnant
speculation by her and other cast members, who feared that they had
caught AIDS by talking to him, it would appear.

Michael Jackson was her last anterior husband, so to speak
(the lusty Taylor always had a romantic partner and close gay
or sexually inscrutable friend – and he was always damaged,
yet touched by her truly maternal warmth).

like the loyal-to-a-fault Egyptian queen she famously portrayed,
Taylor used her nine lives to showcase her beauty and deploy the
 power it gave her.

Elizabeth Taylor’s life is too big beyond daily comprehension and gorgeous too to apprehend. So we must have faith that she used her time here very well, and that the lifelong star, whose “first memory is of pain,” is, at long last, whole and secure in the firmament – her altar.
